A Ceiling Stain Doesn’t Tell You How Big the Roofing Problem Is
Interior water damage tells you moisture got where it shouldn’t.
It does not, by itself, tell you whether the roof needs a repair or replacement.
A stain can result from a relatively small flashing or penetration failure.
Water can also travel along decking, framing or other surfaces before becoming visible inside, so the interior symptom may not sit directly below the exterior entry point.
The roofing decision has to follow the source and extent of the failure.
One dramatic-looking interior stain can come from a repairable defect. At the same time, a roof with no current interior leak can still have widespread exterior deterioration.
That is why leak severity inside the room should not be used as the sole measure of roof condition.
